A Conversation with Martin E. Marty

In November 2012, I had the opportunity to spend a morning with Martin E. Marty in his Chicago residence. Marty is the Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of the History of Modern Christianity in the Divinity School of the University of Chicago.

The author of almost 60 books reflected on how the study of religion, as an academic discipline, has changed during his career; on the results of his global study of fundamentalism and the rise of pluralism; on his own participation in the march from Selma; and on the role of religion in American politics today.
